Strikeforce on CBS; Fedor vs Rogers!

In case you missed it, one of the big fights happened Saturday, November 7, 2009 – Fedor Emelianenko versus Brett Rogers! The other big fights for me (as I only get free TV and I am too cheap to buy pay-per-view) was Cyborg vs Carano and Mir vs Lesnar (I saw this over the Internet).

Strikeforce is one of the more visible organizations. They used to have kickboxing and moved to MMA. Strikeforce took over the EliteXE and aired fights on Showtime. I like that they are still having some fights on CBS.

In this post I’ll highlight some videos (not sure how long they will stay up) and talk about this fight and the middleweight championship Sheilds vs Miller.

Lots of back and forth here but I learned that Brett Rogers can power out of ground attacks. Fedor really has some power in his punches – easy to see why he is so dangerous. That round was fairly even – Rogers landed an early left that had Fedor bloody. Rogers was really tired already whereas Fedor was seemingly pacing himself just fine.

What a decisive punch! I like that Brett was still in the game but Fedor was easily in control in the second round. I do hope to see a rematch but not too fast. Brett while being a great fighter, needs to work on his stamina so he can hang with the likes of Fedor!

Another fight I watched was Jake Sheilds versus Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Here is a link to that fight if you want to see it here. This was more of a jui-jitsu fight because Sheilds kept taking down Miller (I assume he was not comfortable trading punches).

This fight went the distance but Sheilds was saved by the clock as he was about to be submitted via a rear naked choke (middle round as I recall). Other than that near submission, Sheilds out jiu-jitsued Miller (they looked like a couple of pythons) and won most of the rounds and fight.

All in all these were a couple of fun fights. I hope you had a chance to see them.

    Three words: Fedor vs. Lesnar!

Although it does not guarantee a victory, conditioning to go deep into the fight seems too often the deciding factor in many of the outcomes. I can’t understand why the fighters don’t train more for endurance.

    Cheap? Me, too.
I had great reception and truly enjoyed watching the fights. Fedor did it again! I was concerned after Brett Rogers punched him in the nose in the first couple of seconds that with him bleeding profusely it might become an issue for the ref.
I agree with Bob: Fedor vs. Lesnar!
    Still on Dana White’s radar.
What would have happened, had Fedor not won? Hmm.

    Great dog.

Bob – Couldn’t agree more… I thought that was supposed to happen but did not for some reason.

Dr. J! Yep I agree… I used to train with the top point fighter in the 80’s (Steve Anderson, 10 years running) and found that I could only hang with him for about five (2-minute) rounds… if I went more that that – I was just a moving punching bag to him. Five minute rounds seem like a lot.

Big guys that have not had to go a lot of round tend to depend on that. I think if Brett Rogers trains like a middle weight – he will have a better chance.

Hi The Martial Arts Reporter! Yep I was thinking Rogers had a chance and was pleased to see he had some ground skills but I loved Fedor’s seemingly off of the cuff bombs!

    Which dog? :)
