But there were probably many, in fact thousands of others that never dared to walk into a martial arts training hall, because of fear and lack of confidence. We are trying to change that. But if they stay with it long enough, bullies will avoid them like the plague, as they will become formidable fighters. Agree with you that sparring is a necessity!

Great story – I too have learned the hard way that too much of a good move can be bad!

Hey Matt!

I defer to your expertise with children Matt. I was an almost adult when I started with Tracy’s Karate – so the self confidence did not mean much – only if it worked. :)

When it comes to children, building up their self-confidence and self-esteem takes precedence over creating good fighters. You must build them up before you can make them a “fighting machine”. You will lose most of them if you try to do it the other way around.

I think I was probably lucky to have so little fighting experience when I began my martial arts training because I didn’t have any habits, good or bad to have to change.

I really liked using that inverted lunge punch as you described. There was one time, however, when I used it three times in a row against an experienced fighter. I hit him easily the first two times, and like that old WW1 story of “three on a match,” where the third guy in the trenches gets shot lighting his cigarette, he broke my cheekbone on my third attack! The problem was not with the technique :-)
