I saw this video on TV years ago and was surprised on the level of idiocy on the pimp’s part. Just because he scared the women, did not translate well into really being an intimidating figure. The guy had a poor education, maybe no father figure to teach him how to treat women.
When I was in the 4th grade, I made the mistake of slapping a girl back after she had just slapped me. The girl went crying home and told her mother, who told her father after he came home. The girls father came over to my house and told my father. My dad was embarrassed that his son (me) had broken one of societies rules – boys don’t hit girls!)! Well let me tell you that after my father had educated me – I was not able to sit down easily for days and had to apologize to the girl the very next day.
Society has conventions that transcend any laws that may come into play for a reason. Girls and women are boys and men’s partners in life and should be respected. If a girl mis-steps and strikes a boy – two wrongs do not make a right!!! Men should not ever hit women! Anyway review this video and I will try and tie karate principals to the pimp’s education.
This pimp seemed to have what I like to call beer muscle. The pimp really thought he could fight because he was mad? Jay Lee was apparently doing a police training video and told the guy to lay off the girl. The guy came after Lee and walked right into his critical distance to got hit by an apparent back-knuckle strike that dropped him!
This falls into the self-defense category even though the girl did not want her pimp to get hurt. I used to experience similar fights in front of my old studio. You see the karate studio was two doors down from a biker bar and after rescuing a couple of biker girls who in turn cussed me out – I started making them move down the street instead of breaking up the fights! If the girls asked for help – I still did help.
The funniest biker incident I was involved with was when one girl came into the studio and wanted to fight on of my girl students. I warned her to get out and she persisted. I picked her up and tossed her out onto the sidewalk (notice I did not hit her). She got the idea and left.
I think Jay Lee did the right thing to stop the beating and contribute to the pimp’s education. If you liked this post, please sign up for my RSS feed.

That was pretty darn funny seeing that big tough pimp go down in a matter of a second or two. Education is a good thing and Jay Lee is a great teacher, heehee…
I’m sure the pimp will think twice before picking a fight with a stranger in the future.

I love it!! Some men deserve to be humiliated, I doubt this dude will ever learn, but at least he will think twice next time!!

Hey Sly – it sure did not take much to put the pimp down. Anger does not equate to fighting ability.

Hey Amanda – One can hope!

“The guy had a poor education, maybe no father figure to teach him how to treat women.”
He is a PIMP for crying out loud.
“Girls and women are boys and men’s partners in life and should be respected. If a girl mis-steps and strikes a boy – two wrongs do not make a right!!! Men should not ever hit women!”
Respect is earned. Hitting people and then hiding behind daddy is not the way to earn respect.

Hey Words Twice,
.
I expect the best from people and then deal with the reality. The pimp’s reality is not mine so I don’t give him a free pass, and I am still surprised at how he treats women. I was surprised at the gall of the pimp to confront Jay Lee… like he had a right to do anything in the world.
.
Interesting comment about respect, I think both the girl and I learned a lesson that day. My lesson was how to treat women even if they don’t act like a woman and the girl’s lesson was that she should treat men as she would want to be treated.
.
As far as respect being earned… What? Taking it to the absurd… it is ok to act any way you want so long as you don’t respect the other person? What about if the other person really is a jerk… is it really ok to treat him badly?
.
I don’t think so… respect as defined as civility does not have to be earned in my book. Now I have seen a lot of people behaving badly and have dealt with them – my point was and is that it shouldn’t outta be that way.
.
Had the girl not told her father about the incident – I might have gone on thinking it was ok to hit women in anger… I am glad I was punished and I think it is the right thing to discipline your children as needed. I’m probably out of sync with the “time out” crowd but it works.
.
Thanks for your comment.

I know this video has been shown countless times on television and on the Internet, but here is the details of the encounter.
Jay Lee hit him with a reverse palm strike to the Dae Poh pressure point on the side of his neck. He is an old friend and instructor, and he told me this about a week after it happened. He was in the middle of shooting a Defensive Tactics and martial arts training video in an office building across the street. They heard a commotion across the street and he went down to the street to help and the videographer pointed his camera out the window.
The pimp definitely was in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Thanks for the info Steve. Well executed by Jay Lee.

What kind of strike was that?

Dr. Jay Lee was my instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) and trained the Houston PD and now trains the US Military. What Spike TV got incorrect was that the shrug Dr. Lee after the confrontation was over wasn’t to the camera man it was to his buddy who was also upstairs, but instead of a camera he was armed with a tactical weapon.

Hi Dave, Thanks for the clarification – I really enjoyed this clip. It reminded me of what I used to call beer muscle. Some guys would act up in the bar I used to work at and then (due to the beer making them brave) cause trouble – I would attempt to talk them out and then when I had to to throw them out – they would all of a sudden start crying when I hit them (after they tried to throw the first punches).
.
It is amazing the change – from bad to meek in just a few seconds.

This guy (black) is drunk. It’s easy to hit in a drunk man.

Hi Eli, You are right; he is drunk or drugged up. Not sure what you point is. I used to encounter people like this in the bar I worked in… They would get drunk and think they were bad. They only ended up making a fool of themselves.

It is good to see that our Martial Arts is being represented in a positive manner and technique fashion. This is a prime example of the creation of Martial Arts being used for the good of the people for which it was created and intended. It’s refreshing to see justice being served at its elementary level without overkill. Talk about KARMA

Hi Dr. Lockhart,
I totally agree with keeping karate as it was intended. It is kind of a responsibility to accent the positive while planning to handle the worst of humanity. I check out your school website – it looks will put together with programs that make sense.
.
The pimp was finished before he got started in this… Karma is a good description!

John,
I like that in your original post you mentioned that the “biker chicks” you tried to help outside your studio would often end up cussing you out for your good efforts on their behalf. It is an important point to note that while we might think we are helping and have the best intentions…if our help is not wanted, then it is probably inappropriate to get involved. A lot of people have been hurt that way. Trying to help the “damselle in distress” and ending up fighting her as well as her attacker (if he was her boyfriend/husband for instance). This is an important part of OUR education as an “urban warrior” type. And, it is better to get it now than in the street like out pimp friend in the video.

AS you might expect, this video is on YouTube, and some of the dolts on there are actually taking the pimp’s side! (People, after all, can be morons.)
A few are even saying that the pimp then sued Jay Lee and WON! Please tell me this isn’t true. Happily I’ve found nothing on the net referring to any lawsuit when I googled Jay Lee.

This post was extremely interesting, especially since I searching for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.

Wow, that guy got it. Bad timing for him!
