I am a MMA fan that likes to watch the fights that are easily available without watching PPV! That means I just have an overview of the sports from some of the various leagues such as UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, M1, and K1 (probably a lot more too). What I am trying to say is while I opine on the fights I watch; if you were to use me as your sole source of information about men’s and women’s MMA – you would probably be missing a lot.

I’ve been following Strikeforce as I am able (I don’t get Showtime anymore) and just found out that Sarah Kaufman beat Takayo Hashi to win the Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight title!

In this post I will give an overview of the Kaufman vs. Hashi fight and give the latest on Michelle Waterson’s latest fight. I will also speak of some of the (many) exciting MMA fights coming soon in the WEC, UFC, and Strikeforce. Here is a promo video done before the Kaufman vs Hashi fight. I’ll post the four links of the actual fight (not sure how long they will be good) if you want to go to youtube and watch it.

The Year of Women’s MMA; 2010?

7 Feb 2010

After watching the video of Strike Force’s Chris “Cyborg” Santos’ latest win, I wonder, is 2010 going to be the breakout year for women’s MMA? We have watched Gina Carano rise to become one of the most recognized female fighters and then lose the title fight to Cyborg in 2009. There are more women kick boxers/Muay Thai fighters learning how to do jiu jitsu so they can compete in MMA so I ask you – Is 2010 going to be the year of women’s MMA?

In this post I will talk about if this is the year women’s MMA is going to take off. I will talk a bit about the perception of women’s MMA in general and the required skill sets. Here is an overview of women’s MMA created in mid-2009.

Strikeforce; Cyborg Santos vs Coenen!

This is a quick post about the January 30th, 2010 Chris “Cyborg” Santos vs Marloes Coenen match for the 145 pound championship coming up. Also some other mentions fighting that night; Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler, & Herschel Walker are all fighting on the same card.

Unfortunately I do not have showtime anymore so I will be reduced to finding the Santos vs Coenen fight on the internet. If you are curious, with economic downturn, I’ve turned off digital cable but kept the inexpensive network channels.

In this post I’ll talk a bit about Cyborg’s challenger and show one of her fights. It is not that I am not interested in the other fights but I am more interested in seeing women’s MMA take off. Here is an interview with Marloes Coenen.

All of you boys and girls out there know that you better not shout or pout because Santa’s coming to town. Have you ever wondered about Santa? Can the old fat guy in the red suit, fight his way out of a paper bag?

In this post I hope to answer that question as well as look at Saturday’s headliner fights in the WEC 45 and Strikforce Evolution. First take a look at this Santa!

18 Nov 2009

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 is when Mike Brown is defending his title against Jose Aldo. I’ve been watching both fighters recently and have been impressed by Brown’s title defenses and Aldo’s decisive wins.

Both fighters in my view  could walk away with the belt. Brown does well against pressure and may successfully defend against Aldo’s standup and ground onslaught but it should be a great fight.

By the way Tito Ortiz vs Forest Griffin is happening this Saturday and should get a mention. Its not that I am not excited about this bout but I have to snake it from the internet if I am to see any of it. This as most UFC bouts is – is a PPV event.  I think Brown vs Aldo is also PPV somewhere but I can still see it on Versus TV! Here is the preview of Brown vs Aldo.

Strikeforce on CBS; Fedor vs Rogers!

8 Nov 2009

In case you missed it, one of the big fights happened Saturday, November 7, 2009 – Fedor Emelianenko versus Brett Rogers! The other big fights for me (as I only get free TV and I am too cheap to buy pay-per-view) was Cyborg vs Carano and Mir vs Lesnar (I saw this over the Internet).

Strikeforce is one of the more visible organizations. They used to have kickboxing and moved to MMA. Strikeforce took over the EliteXE and aired fights on Showtime. I like that they are still having some fights on CBS.

In this post I’ll highlight some videos (not sure how long they will stay up) and talk about this fight and the middleweight championship Sheilds vs Miller.

Faber vs Brown 2; WEC 41! What a Fight!!!

14 Sep 2009

One of the best fights I saw during the Summer was Faber vs Brown 2 for the WEC Featherweight title! For those of you not familiar with the WEC featherweights, Urijah Faber had it for a while. When I first started watching Faber a couple of years ago, he was the kind of fighter that always won by submission. It was kind of fun to watch his fights because often he would give up his back and then pull a reversal and win the match!

Urijah showed off his standing game (for the first time I saw) in the first Jens Pulver fight. Faber has a kind of karate distance - lunging punch that can bridge the distance easily but it packs a wallop! The main move I love is his elbows (which you will see a lot of in this fight).

In this post I will first show the video of the fight and then contrast it with the moves that I normally see from Faber. By the way the previous time Mike Brown took the WEC Featherweight belt decisively – Faber was taken down and he seemed to recover a bit too quickly (bounced right up) and he bridged the gap with a crazy elbow! Brown hit Faber with a right hand and easily followed up for the win! What I was most hoping to see in this fight was Faber not losing the match but each fighter duking it out to see who was the best fighter. Here is the full fight (if it slows down – pause it for a minute)
