I remember back to the 1980’s when Ghost Busters first came out and I thought wouldn’t it we weird if there were really things that went bump in the night? I am the type of guy that does not think twice about going into the woods at night. I figure the worst that can happen to me is a momentary surprise before I take care of the offending animal. But what about the strange, abby normal and downright supernatural?

Well I, like many, have been curious about spirits, monsters, aliens, and hauntings so imagine my excitement when my wife (Sly) created her website a couple of years ago called Paranormaland! Now I know that ghosts and werewolves are not my normal subject of self-defense but what if that is happening to you? I mean where do you go for the straight dope on supernatural, out of this world and weird things you do not know about? Well one place is Paranormaland.com!

In this post I will give an overview of some of the topics discussed on Paranormaland and how some of these topics might help one in a real life self-defense situation. However most of the topics are just strange and interesting. Here is how the top of the website looks.

Road Rage! What About Sticks and Stones?

I had a funny situation happen to me today on my run. You see I like to run a hill a couple of miles away from the house. On the jog over, as I was running over the bridge to Santee Lakes, I heard some profanity as well as saw a coffee creamer appear on the sidewalk in front of me. Wow  I thought – what was happening… but as my head spun around I saw only a bunch of cars in traffic running through the light.

I would like to say I was not agitated but that would be a lie. In this post I would like to re-examine what road rage is and how one can deal with it if it happens to you. I will follow up with possible actions and repercussions of ones actions in any road rage incident. Here to set the stage is one video of how quickly an incident can happen.

Fighting for Stuff; Is it Worth It?

How many times have I seen stories about karate instructors telling students if someone tries to grab your purse or wallet, you can do the following technique! WHAT? Yes I have heard instructors teaching students to not only defend ones life but personal property in self-defense too!

Understandably this is a hot button issue because on one hand people with the old west mentality will argue that not only is it legal to fight over personal property, but if you know how to fight it is a smart thing to do! Teach the robber a lesson and hold the guy for the cops and such.

In this post I will examine the logic of self-defense of purse or wallet from a legal and common sense framework. Should karate instructors teach students that they should try to defend personal property? Here is a quick video of one good samaritan that did come to a women’s rescue that was being robbed of her purse.

Girls Self-Defense; Just Yell Fire!

As often happens in my search for exciting topics to write about, I was channel surfing and I came across (by accident) this girl, Dallas Jessup, speaking about a free DVD that teaches girls to stay safe and fight back! I got the web address and checked out the movie here

Now I am a big proponent of women’s self-defense and I think any effort to pull together all of the facets in a successful defense are good. The problem with women’s self-defense normally are many girls and women think and feel like they are powerless against a bigger, stronger, and meaner male attacker!

In this post I’ll speak about the fallacy of this view that girls and women are powerless and examine this movie, Just Yell Fire, for you perusal. Here is a quick video trailer of the move. I encourage all to visit the website (http://www.JustYellFire.com) if you have any women in your family (most families have some) that might benefit.

Girls Fight Back to Get Away!

28 Dec 2009

A major recurring theme of this website is reviewing some real life actions that have helped some people escape the worst of an attack! In this post I will look at attacks from December 2009, in the US, Canada and Uganda to demonstrate what is possible.

These three attacks while very different, have one common thread – The women or girls fought back! The main question running through most women’s minds in an attack is probably how do I get out of this alive?

By the time an attack happens, a woman has exhausted everything she has been taught about how to avoid or get away from an attack and is left with the fact that it is really happening. Let me just say before launching into my review, that the decision to act or not act is a personal decision. You (the victim) will have to live with your decision (assuming you survive) so please consider the possibility that fighting back in some form can work and make an educated decision to SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Here is a related video to set the stage from Erin Weed (Girls Fight Back).

Nut Kicking and Ball Busting Girls?

I have posted about this before but have you noticed that there are a lot of these ball busting stories and videos? Just go to any search engine and type in “ball busting” and you will see lots of stuff about how girls are able to make men roll around in pain after kicking them in the nuts!

In this post I’ll examine whether or not a girl or woman can reasonably expect that a swift kick in the balls will result in an incapicated man! What can happen to a guy that has had his cojones smashed? I’ll also look at why girls and women might feel the need to have something over men. The biggest question for me is why some guys willingly allow some girls to kick their family jewels!

To set the stage for this discussion here is a good overview of ball busting videos I found on youtube.

Kung Fu Fighting; Self-Defense?

As a well traveled woman, you feel safe at your beach front resort in one of Mexico’s beach cities. After a while you decide to take a walk to the cantina for some cervesas! The sun warms you in your bikini as you think about that gentleman that said he would meet you at the cantina today.

All of a sudden you notice some unsavory characters in your path through the alley shortcut. Being a worldly woman you realize that the time to act is before you are attacked. You warn them off as you take another path. The guys move quickly to intercept!

In this post I will examine self-defense as a concept in its own right! I mean many enlightened people will take kung fu or karate for the goal of self-defense, but really – how good are the martial arts for self-defense? I will explore one kung fu master, Bruce Lee, with his views about martial arts as they apply to fighting and oh yes – I will finish the story about this soon to be accosted woman in a foreign country.

Here is part of an interview with Bruce Lee to set the stage for this conversation. Martial arts are discussed at about 3:11 of this interview.

Just a quick update on tonights fight. Jose Aldo won decisively in the 2nd round. Brown looked strong but he did not have an answer for Aldo’s speed and was not able to take Jose down. Aldo kicked and punched Brown in his normal relaxed fasion. Jose took Mike down in the 2nd and then rained down unanswered punches to Mike’s head… took the W!
