Strikeforce; Cyborg Santos vs Coenen!

This is a quick post about the January 30th, 2010 Chris “Cyborg” Santos vs Marloes Coenen match for the 145 pound championship coming up. Also some other mentions fighting that night; Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler, & Herschel Walker are all fighting on the same card.

Unfortunately I do not have showtime anymore so I will be reduced to finding the Santos vs Coenen fight on the internet. If you are curious, with economic downturn, I’ve turned off digital cable but kept the inexpensive network channels.

In this post I’ll talk a bit about Cyborg’s challenger and show one of her fights. It is not that I am not interested in the other fights but I am more interested in seeing women’s MMA take off. Here is an interview with Marloes Coenen.

I found a story about Marloes Coenen here. I have not seen Marloes fight before so I did a search and found this video.

Coenen seems to have the skills back in 2004 but was noticeably lacking the power and decisiveness she will need to beat Santos. I did notice in the interview that she does not seem to be afraid of Santos so she won’t be working against herself like Carino seemed to.

See the best MMA resources.

I think Chris Santos is a great fighter that really put in the work to do what it took to beat Gina Carano. I hope she puts in the same effort here and Coenen is a truly worthy adversary! It should be a fun fight to watch. Here is a promotion video of the Strikeforce event.

Well there you have it for Strikeforce this Saturday. I hope you enjoy the fights!

I don’t have Showtime either but was able to see all of that event the next day on Internet Justin TV. The Cyborg fight was a good one with each fighter having some strong moments. Hershel is something else! Of course I was able to see him in his prime when he decimated the Gator football team in the old days. For Hershal, however, there are no old days lol!

What do you think of Cung Le? His style is more karate than any MMA fighter I’ve ever seen, even Machita.

Also, it seems to me that MMA fighters still have a ways to go with learning how to block, and when to move forward to get inside a kicking opponents strike rather than back up into their opponents power zone. Although I must admit that when asked about defense by students, I have suggested attacking and letting the opponent worry about defense :-)

    Hey Dr. J,

I just saw cyborg fight over at megavideo… wow she domanited. I saw Hershal the other day and boy is he strong… he just stuffed everything the other guy threw.

Cung Le fight more to my liking. My wife’s newphew, Tony Corleone, wrote his song, “It’s going down”:

I watched Le’s last fight and he was easily beating Smith (who did not know what to make of spinning rears and side kicks). Yeah Machita does some karate but has too wide of a stance and is starting to fight too close to be effective with karate hands.

My beef with MMA is they ignore the groin. In any real fight you cannot do that because you will lose fast. So if they had groin kicks – they could not adopt the Mauy Thai, Boxing type of wide stances. Karateka are good at bridging the gap from the outside.

I guess we need some more fighters like Cung Le to make karate popular again. :)

Hi John, agree with you about the lack of groin shots. Even in point karate back in the 80′s and 90′s we were allowed to scoop kick to the groin. If you weren’t wearing a cup, well that was your problem. They have since outlawed it, presumably to bring in more high kicks to bring attendances up (it is the best anecdote against high kickers). It is also a top technique on the street and you cannot call yourself a “reality fighter” without knowing how to use it. I say bring it back.

I don’t know who can beat Cyborg right now. I’m just starting to get to know different women fighters. Cyborg is a beast! She is rock solid! I wonder who is coming through the ranks to take her on. Roxanne Modafferi, who might have fought Cyborg if she had beaten Marloes, is fighting Tara Larosa (rematch) on Friday in Worcester, MA at Moosin’s show. Tara’s won 15 straight matches! I want Roxanne to win this time :D

    Hey Cheryl!

I love Cyborg but not to the point of having a favorite really. I respect her work ethic and how tough she is.

I’ve not really kept up with MMA other than a few fighters. Thanks for the info on Modafferi and Larosa… I’ll look them up.
